Enforce your right as a parent to protect your family

In today’s world, when it comes to protecting the well-being of our children, many parents just like you are faced with an onslaught of media competing for the attention of their young minds. This is not just sexual content, violence and language, we’re talking about. Your kids are being fed innuendos, subliminal messages, indoctrination and social conditioning like never before in history. Filtering services like VidAngel allow you to pre-edit (skip over parts you choose) movies and TV shows giving you peace of mind about what your children are exposed to.

Right now there is another battle waging behind the scenes, and its outcome will directly affect your rights as a parent. Four Hollywood studios (Disney—along with Warner Bros, 20th Century Fox, and Lucasfilm) have entered in legal battles with VidAngel, in a case that is sure to set a precedent for the future of the filtering industry. This is not the first time Hollywood has strongly opposed filtering services. After all, they were against the Family Movie Act (FMA), a law designed to empower parents and enable filtering services. The #SaveFiltering petition exists to enforce your right to choose how your family consumes content in the privacy of your own home before Hollywood takes it away.

We use VidAngel several times a week and are so grateful for a tool that allows us to enjoy movies that were meant to be seen, yet in a way that we feel meets our family standards. Otherwise we would miss many of these beautiful and inspiring pieces of art! Thank you VidAngel!

Parents should be able to control the content in their own homes! These are our children. Just as every citizen has the right to freedom of speech, we also have the right to freedom from speech in our own homes. And not just speech; sex and violence and other content that we do not think is appropriate. There is obviously some precedent of this in movies and video games with the rating system. It can be agreed that some things are not appropriate for children, and some adults don’t like to be exposed to it either. I think the movie studios and industry don’t understand that there are some people, who, if content is not filtered, they would not buy it or watch it. period. Growing up, I know Disney channel movies on their own Disney Channel, that wasn’t so long ago, and I enjoyed watching those movies. But when I was out on my own and saw those movies in their un-edited form, I did not buy them and I have not shown them to my children because there is offensive content. There must be some way we can enjoy movies that are made, without directors, producers and studios feeling as if we have somehow desecrated their creation. Surely it is in their interest to find a compromise with companies like VidAngel.

Surely there is a better solution than trying to shut down VidAngel. I support movie studios’ rights to protect their intellectual property, but they don’t need to feel so threatened by filtering. The fact that they are so unwilling to even negotiate or facilitate anything related to filtering is antagonistic of them and saddening to many of us. They seem unable or unwilling to own the reality that they have forced filtering’s hand and essentially brought the current situation upon themselves. At every step of the way in this series of unfortunate events their motivations and intentions seem to be focused solely on money and artistic liberty, and never on respecting the choice of the viewers themselves. :(

It’s true that VidAngel’s business model is on trial here, but behind the scenes so is the movie studios’ character! I plead with and encourage them to consider other options now. Cast your vision toward building a better future for everyone, and help bring that about instead of digging in your heels and gnashing your teeth. People want to be able to filter for themselves; don’t fight against that. Even though business-wise you have been able to ignore it for a while now, the world is changing more rapidly in this regard (as in so many others) and those who cannot find ways to change with it will be left behind at some point. Recognize and come to embrace the valuable position you are in right now to participate in an awesome transformation of the way we all enjoy media. This can be a sweet opportunity for you as well, if you let it be so. :)
