Enforce your right as a parent to protect your family

In today’s world, when it comes to protecting the well-being of our children, many parents just like you are faced with an onslaught of media competing for the attention of their young minds. This is not just sexual content, violence and language, we’re talking about. Your kids are being fed innuendos, subliminal messages, indoctrination and social conditioning like never before in history. Filtering services like VidAngel allow you to pre-edit (skip over parts you choose) movies and TV shows giving you peace of mind about what your children are exposed to.

Right now there is another battle waging behind the scenes, and its outcome will directly affect your rights as a parent. Four Hollywood studios (Disney—along with Warner Bros, 20th Century Fox, and Lucasfilm) have entered in legal battles with VidAngel, in a case that is sure to set a precedent for the future of the filtering industry. This is not the first time Hollywood has strongly opposed filtering services. After all, they were against the Family Movie Act (FMA), a law designed to empower parents and enable filtering services. The #SaveFiltering petition exists to enforce your right to choose how your family consumes content in the privacy of your own home before Hollywood takes it away.

Movie filtering is extremely important to us. We are foster parents and have a total of 7 children ages 1 to 13, some with specific disorders. One child’s counselor has instructed that she should not see violence, blood, or gore portrayed in what she watches as she has a particular fascination (even at 5 years old!) for these things. I ask, “Should we just not watch any movies for our daughter’s sake?” Make no mistake that as loving parents we are willing to make such a sacrifice, but we have VidAngel that allows us to filter out these things for movies we buy from them. We most often watch these movies as a family, and I’m very glad we can. I have yet to find another service that can do what VidAngel does for my family at an affordable cost. VidAngel is it!

There are many movies we would not watch without filtering. If there is a movie we love, but don’t want the garbage that is sometimes part of the “art” of movie making, or simply need to tone it down for a younger audience, we can buy it from VidAngel and keep it indefinitely as part of our family’s movie library, adjusting our filter settings as need be. We love this idea and this service and no else provides it at an affordable cost.

It is self-defeating for the movie industry to say that if you object to the content of a movie, you simply shouldn’t watch it. There is a HUGE untapped market for movies that families, like mine, would watch if they simply had the option of removing or altering profanity, violence, or sexual content. It is common knowledge that movies that are considered to be particularly family un-friendly, do not break records at the box office like more family-friendly movies do. Also, we do not compromise our family values for Hollywood (for example, we’ve never seen Titanic, but with VidAgnel we may!). So why put pressure on VidAngel for doing what the industry simply won’t? Because the studios are greedy and do not want the little guy to succeed. VidAngel is enabling a market for movies that families would not watch otherwise and that means more money for the studios too. In other words: A Win-Win.

The movie industry does not have a good argument for disallowing filtering. VidAngel does not force it on my family. In fact, they give me the option to change the filtering at any time and tell me what I am choosing to filter out. Thank you VidAngel!

Furthermore, we do not trust studios (even Disney) in general. They have disappointed us too many times in the past. VidAngel allows us to screen movie content we might find inappropriate in close to real-time, without having to spend the 1 to 2 hours of additional time to pre-screen a film as was our parental practice before VidAngel became part of our entertainment options.

Again, thank you VidAngel for making this service available to our family and many others.

    Most sincerely,

    - Benjamin M. Lee (and family)

We should have the right to filter out the movies we watch just as much as the big TV channel companies that have the right to censor their content.

I love having the option to filter movies. If I don’t have this option there are many movies I will choose to not watch.

Seriously, there is no downside to filtering. More people get to watch (and pay for) movies that because of various types or levels of content – they wouldn’t be watched. It allows people the freedom to watch a film, and the filmmakers and distributors get paid just like they would anyways. It’s a win-win.

This is very important for me and my family. What I watch will impact how I think and how I feel and I want control over those things!
